With the governments announcement that all over 50’s will be offered a routine seasonal flu vaccination this years campaign will inevitably be more challenging than usual. We have been advised by NHS England to prioritise our higher risk patient first and only vaccinate well patients once we have completed these, and subject to availability.
It is likely that we will not complete our vaccination of high risk patients until December.
We had already begun planning how we might deliver our regular vaccinations in a socially distanced world, which was causing issues with how many vaccinations we can give in a single clinic. We will not be able to do our usual walk in clinics this year but are looking at what options we may have vaccinate a large number of people in a timely manner.
Like all GP practices we ordered our seasonal flu vaccinations many months ago, these will arrive in batches over a six to eight week period starting mid September, if things go to plan.
We have ordered enough vaccinations for our regular target population meaning we will need to source approx.. 1500 additional vaccinations if we are to be asked to vaccinate the 50 – 64 age group.. We are waiting for government advice and believe that there may be a plan to supply these centrally however , as yet, we have heard nothing official.
We appreciate this may lead to some frustration but would ask our patients to bear with us as we try to manage delivering vaccinations to between 2500 and 4000 patients.
Please keep an eye on the website as we will post updates as the time draws nearer
